Tyrol heading for the top of European quantum research

Quanten-Hub Tirol

Tyrol emerges as a leading European hub for quantum technology. The Quantum Hub Tyrol connects science and industry, drives innovation, and sustainably strengthens the region’s international positioning.

The Quanten-Hub Tirol is a joint initiative of Onsight Ventures, Alpine Quantum Technologies, and Standortagentur Tirol. Its mission is to establish Tyrol as an internationally visible flagship location for quantum technology and to systematically accelerate the transfer of scientific research into economic and industrial applications.

Tyrol benefits from an exceptionally strong academic landscape. Since the 1990s, the University of Innsbruck, supported by internationally renowned researchers, has been among the world’s leading institutions in quantum research. Building on this excellence, the Quanten-Hub Tirol serves as a central platform for innovation, knowledge transfer, and economic impact.

Standortagentur Tirol as a Key Driver and Connector
Standortagentur Tirol plays a central role as a location developer and network facilitator. It supports companies in establishing and expanding their presence in Tyrol, accompanies innovation projects, and actively promotes collaboration between science and industry. At the same time, it contributes to attracting international companies and highly qualified talent to the region.

In 2026, the Province of Tyrol supports the Quanten-Hub Tirol with funding of €120,000. In addition, further national and European funding instruments are being mobilized to ensure the long-term development and international competitiveness of the location.

Core Objectives of the Quanten-Hub Tirol
  • Connecting research and industry: Scientific insights from quantum research are systematically translated into market-ready applications.
  • Promoting innovation and commercialization: Research results are developed into concrete products, services, and scalable business models.
  • Building a strong ecosystem: Targeted strengthening of cooperation between companies, research institutions, and international partners.
  • Attracting investment: Public and private funding supports the sustainable growth of the quantum ecosystem.
  • Developing talent: New education and training programs secure highly qualified specialists in future-oriented fields such as microelectronics, solid-state physics, and quantum software engineering.
  • Creating jobs: The Quanten-Hub Tirol contributes to the creation of new high-tech jobs and supports long-term economic growth in the region.

Scientific Excellence and Economic Implementation

During its first year, the Quanten-Hub Tirol focused on strategic groundwork and structural development. Key activities included:

  • Conducting a comprehensive potential analysis to position Tyrol within the European quantum and semiconductor ecosystem
  • Connecting key stakeholders from science, industry, and public policy
  • Defining strategic fields of action for the development of a strong and resilient quantum ecosystem
  • Establishing a dedicated platform for knowledge transfer and cooperation

This foundational phase confirmed Tyrol’s strong starting position in a European comparison and laid the groundwork for the subsequent development stages.

With the second project year, the Quanten-Hub Tirol transitions from analysis to active implementation. Key priorities include:

  • Further development of funding structures: Designing new models to bundle European, national, and regional funding instruments effectively.
  • International positioning: Expanding Tyrol’s visibility and recognition as a leading location for quantum technology.
  • Cooperation and networks: Intensifying collaboration with industry partners, investors, and international stakeholders.
  • Access to funding: Securing substantial funding, including seven-figure investments from programs such as the European Chips Act.
  • Infrastructure development: Evaluating and developing suitable physical infrastructure for research activities and company settlements.
  • International presence: Active participation in international conferences and events, along with targeted global positioning.
